Two Words, Two Features

Tilt or tag? They are two different words

The tag is how it hitches. The tilt is how it loads. Most of what we sell is both at once — a tag-along pulled behind the truck on a drawbar rather than a fifth wheel, with a deck that tilts so you can drive equipment on without carrying ramps. You can buy a tag that does not tilt and a tilt that is not a tag; on a construction yard the combination is what people actually want, which is why the category carries both names.

That matters when you are comparing listings. A marketplace search for "tag trailer" will hand you 7,000-pound consumer equipment trailers and 30-ton commercial decks in the same results page. The two units below are the commercial end.

The line on that spec sheet worth reading twice is the tilt cylinder. A 4-by-16 metered cushion cylinder is what keeps the deck from slamming through the balance point when a skid steer crests it — the internal metering bleeds the flow so the deck settles instead of dropping. It is the difference between a controlled load and a bent D-ring, and it is the kind of detail that never appears in a marketplace listing.

The other one is the decking. Oak on the outer deck areas, fastened at every crossmember, with rough-surface fir between — oak where the tracks and outriggers land, fir where they do not. That is a deliberate build, not a cost saving.

Buying One

Where these come from, and how you get one

Western Truck & Trailer has sold commercial iron since 1983 and runs four yards today: Salt Lake City, North Las Vegas, Belgrade, and Atlanta, Texas. Tilt and tag stock is genuinely shallow — a couple of decks at a time — so most buyers in this category end up specifying a build rather than picking one off the row. What is on the yard ships in days; a factory build runs 8 to 16 weeks, which means a deck you want for spring gets ordered in winter.

Financing is where a build order stops being scary: $0 down for qualified buyers, terms to six years, seasonal skip payments and a 60–90 day deferred first payment, so the note starts after the deck is earning. All credit types considered, same-day pre-approval, no early-payoff penalty, trade-ins accepted.

One footnote worth knowing before you buy: wrenching happens at Salt Lake City and North Las Vegas only — Belgrade and Atlanta are sales yards. Parts go the other way, by phone to your shop anywhere in the continental US, and delivery runs nationwide out of any of the four.

“I got the opportunity to work with Wesley on a deal and I will say hands down he was the best.”

— Bridger M., Western Truck & Trailer customer (Google review, Belgrade, MT)

Hauling something that will not clear on a tilt deck? Our lowboy trailers in stock page shows every low-deck and removable-neck unit on the ground across all four yards.

Tilt & Tag FAQ

Common tilt and tag questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about tilt and tag trailers.

A tag trailer, or tag-along, hitches behind the truck on a drawbar or pintle rather than a fifth wheel. A tilt trailer has a deck that pivots so equipment can drive on without ramps. They are separate features and a lot of commercial units are both, which is why the category is called tilt and tag. When you are comparing units, check the hitch type and the tilt hardware separately.

The two units we carry are both rated 60,000 pounds distributed — 30 tons — on three 25,000-pound axles, with GVWRs of 73,760 and 72,940 pounds. That is the heavy commercial end. Light-duty tilt and tag trailers sold for consumer use are typically rated between 7,000 and 14,000 pounds, so read the capacity before you read the price.

Skid steers, compact excavators, pavers, rollers, mini track loaders, forklifts, light machinery — anything you would rather drive on than crane on, and anything you want moved without carrying ramps. Contractors run them because one operator can load and secure a machine without a second set of hands.

Yes. We stock a small number at a time and order the rest. In-stock units ship in days; a factory build runs 8 to 16 weeks. Call (888) 615-1388 with the machine you are loading and its operating weight and we will spec deck length, axle count and tilt hardware around it.
