Rentals from Western Truck & Trailer

Commercial dump trailer rentals

Two out of every three trailers on our rental books is a dump. Thirty-six side dumps and twenty-nine belly dumps out of a hundred rental units — SmithCo, Ranco and Manac iron. If you are adding hauling capacity for a season, covering a unit that is down, or testing whether a second train pays before you buy one, this is the fleet you are renting from.

These are commercial semi-trailer dumps. Not bumper-pull. One of the belly dumps in the fleet is a fourteen-cubic-yard pup; a six-axle side dump on the list carries 35.6 cubic yards heaped and is rated to haul 37.4 tons.

The Fleet

What we actually rent

The rental dump fleet is side dumps and belly dumps. End dumps we sell — they are a sales category, not a rental one — so if an end dump is what the job needs, call the branch and we will tell you straight what we can do rather than list something we do not have.

Side dumps (36 units)

A side dump tips its tub to one side on hydraulic rams and can lay material down while the truck creeps forward. It keeps its center of gravity low through the dump, which is why crews run them on tight or uneven ground where a raised box would get nervous. The rental side dumps are almost all SmithCo SX-series, from three-axle SX3s up to six-axle SX6s.

Belly dumps (29 units)

Clamshell gates in the belly open and lay a controlled windrow under the trailer as you roll — one pass spreads road base without a second machine. The rental belly dumps are Manac/CPS and Ranco, in lead-and-pup pairs as well as singles.

That last one is a lead trailer, and it is the half of the answer most rental pages skip. Its matching pup — unit RT-73, a Ranco 14-24-4P: fourteen cubic yards, quad axle, thirteen-foot drawbar with jack, tapered body, infinite Versa hydraulic gate control — was also on the yard. A lead and a pup pulled together is a belly dump train, and it is the reason a paving crew rents two trailers instead of one: the train lays a continuous windrow behind a single truck. Rent the pair and you are running a 3-4 train, three axles under the lead and four under the pup.

The Numbers

Reading a rental spec sheet without getting burned

Two numbers decide whether a dump trailer suits your material, and neither of them is the price.

Cubic yards, water level versus heaped.
Every SmithCo tub publishes both. Water level is what fits with the load struck flat; heaped is what fits with the load mounded. The gap is large — 26.8 against 35.6 on the SX6 — and a quote written off the heaped number for a material that will not mound is a quote you cannot fill. Match the number to the material, not to the brochure.
Volume is not weight.
A cubic yard of wet sand and a cubic yard of road base are not the same weight, and the trailer's legal payload comes from its axle count and the states you run in, not from the size of the tub. That is why the fleet carries three-axle up to six-axle side dumps rather than one size. Tell us the material, the tonnage and the states, and we will put you on the axle count that keeps you legal.
The Terms

Terms, delivery and what happens after the rental

Rentals run daily, weekly, monthly and long term. Rates move with the term and the unit, so they are quoted rather than posted — call (888) 615-1388 with the dates and the trailer and you will get a number the same day.

Rentals are arranged through our Salt Lake City, North Las Vegas, Belgrade and Atlanta, Texas branches. Salt Lake is the closest yard to the Utah County corridor — American Fork, Lehi, Orem, Provo, Pleasant Grove, Spanish Fork and Springville all sit on the same stretch of I-15 — and we can coordinate delivery for customers in neighboring states. Contractors regularly rent from us for projects across the surrounding regions: Idaho, Arizona, California, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Louisiana and the Dakotas.

Two things worth knowing before you book. Service and parts run out of Salt Lake City and North Las Vegas; Belgrade and Atlanta are sales yards. And a rental is often the front half of a purchase — plenty of customers run a unit for a season, decide it fits, and buy. Financing is $0 down for qualified buyers with terms to six years, seasonal skip payments and a 60 to 90 day deferred first payment, so the note starts after the trailer is earning.

“Great service, quality equipment ready to go. Wes even met me on Sunday.”

Need low-deck equipment instead of a dump? Our lowboy rentals page covers the heavy-haul side of the fleet. To see what is on the ground right now, browse the side dump rental fleet and the belly dump rental fleet.

Call (888) 615-1388 or request a rental — give us the material, the tonnage, the dates and the states you run, and we will match a trailer to it.

Dump Rental FAQ

Common Dump Trailer Rental Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about renting side dumps and belly dumps.

Side dumps and belly dumps. The rental fleet runs about thirty-six side dumps, mostly SmithCo SX-series from three-axle up to six-axle, and about twenty-nine belly dumps from Manac/CPS and Ranco, including lead-and-pup pairs. End dumps are a sales category rather than a rental one. Availability moves week to week across the four yards, so call for what is open on your dates.

It depends on the unit. On the current fleet, a Ranco 14-24-4P pup holds fourteen cubic yards, a Ranco LW-21-40-3 lead holds twenty-one, a Manac 4B240A200 belly dump holds twenty cubic yards in a single hopper or twenty-three with bangboards, and a SmithCo SX6-53-40 side dump holds 26.8 cubic yards water level or 35.6 heaped and is rated to haul 37.4 tons. Volume is not the same as legal payload — the axle count and the states you run in set that.

A matched pair: a lead belly dump and a pup pulled behind it, so one truck lays a continuous windrow instead of stopping to reload. On our fleet the Ranco LW-21-40-3 lead pairs with a 14-24-4P pup to make a 3-4 train — three axles under the lead and four under the pup. Paving and grading crews rent the pair together.

Daily, weekly, monthly and long term, and yes. Rates vary by term and unit, so we quote rather than post them. Rental trailers are available through our locations in Utah, Nevada, Montana and Texas, we support projects across the surrounding regions, and we can coordinate delivery for customers in neighboring states. Call (888) 615-1388 with your dates and we will confirm the unit and the freight.
