SmithCo SX5 5 axle side dumps.
Compare the five-axle configuration around the route, turning space and tractor. SmithCo’s 49-foot reference and Western’s longer-frame listings need separate dimension and equipment checks.

Compare the frame, tub and axle positions
The SX5-4938 reference pairs a 49-foot frame with a 38-foot tub. Western also lists SX5-53-38 builds. A longer frame does not automatically mean a longer tub or a larger usable payload.
Specify the lift and steer equipment
SmithCo describes a steerable lift axle behind the landing gear and an optional steerable fifth axle. Ask which arrangement is included in the proposal and how it fits your tractor, site access and intended routes.
Questions before you choose.
Does a 53-foot SX5 have a larger tub than the 49-foot version?
Not necessarily. Western’s SX5-49-38 and SX5-53-38 model references both identify a 38-foot tub. Confirm the exact dimensions and axle positions instead of assuming frame length sets tub capacity.
How do I check SX5 availability?
Matching live listings appear on this page, with available and incoming quantities shown separately. If none appear, send your required configuration and target date so sales can review sourcing options.
Bring us the application.
- The material and load
- Bring the material, density, target load and loading equipment. Tub volume and usable payload answer different questions.
- The tractor and route
- Include the tractor wheelbase, axle arrangement and routes. Review the complete combination and required weight distribution before choosing trailer axles.
- The working configuration
- Compare fixed, lift and steerable axles, tires, tarp and tractor hydraulics. Confirm dimensions and equipment on the actual build sheet.
